Kylian Mbappé’s debut season at Real Madrid is already etching its place in the club’s illustrious history.
Arriving at the Santiago Bernabéu last summer amidst immense anticipation, the French superstar has not only met but exceeded expectations. Despite what has been described as an underwhelming season for Los Blancos, Mbappé has been a shining light across all competitions, achieving significant milestones along the way.
In Real Madrid’s recent 2-1 victory over Mallorca, the 26-year-old forward netted his 28th league goal of the season, shattering a club record that had stood for 71 years. Mbappé now holds the distinction of scoring the most La Liga goals by a Real Madrid player in their debut campaign, surpassing the legendary Alfredo Di Stéfano’s previous record of 27 goals.
Di Stéfano set the benchmark during Real Madrid’s 1953-54 season. Remarkably, no other player in the club’s history, including their all-time leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, had managed to break this record until Mbappé’s arrival.
This individual achievement is just one of many highlights in Mbappé’s debut season. The phenomenal forward recently broke Real Madrid’s debut goalscoring record in all competitions during the thrilling 4-3 defeat to Barcelona in the final El Clásico of the season. His hat-trick in that match, while not enough to secure a victory for Los Blancos, propelled his total to 39 goals, eclipsing Iván Zamorano’s previous debut record of 37 goals.
Just three days later, Mbappé has already reached the remarkable milestone of 40 goals. With two league games remaining this season, as well as the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup this summer, the Frenchman has the opportunity to equal and even surpass his personal best goalscoring season total of 44 goals from last season.
Furthermore, Mbappé is the clear favorite to win the prestigious Pichichi Trophy for La Liga’s top scorer. The French captain now holds a commanding three-goal lead over Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski, who currently sits in second place.
