Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has indicated that while he desires to remain at Old Trafford, he has not ruled out the possibility of leaving the club if they decide to cash in on him. His comments come in the wake of United’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
Ruben Amorim’s side missed a crucial opportunity to salvage their calamitous season with silverware on Wednesday night. The loss not only extends United’s trophy drought but also means they will miss out on European football altogether next season, as they are set to record their lowest-ever Premier League finish.
Fernandes, a pivotal figure for United, has reportedly attracted strong interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. A lucrative fee for the 30-year-old could significantly aid United in financing a much-needed squad rebuild during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Speaking to Portuguese media after the final in Bilbao, Fernandes conceded that his long-term future ultimately rests with the club’s decision-makers.
“I will be here until the club tells me it is time to leave,” Fernandes stated. “The day the club thinks I am too much, or it is time to leave, football is like that and you never know. If the club thinks it is time to leave, because they want to make some money, that is what it is and football is like that sometimes.”
Despite the team’s woeful run of results since Ruben Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag in November, Fernandes also publicly backed his manager.
“It’s not my decision, I think Ruben Amorim is the right person,” Fernandes asserted. “I know it’s difficult to understand, but I still believe he’s the right coach. The club is in a situation where it’s easy to have a new coach because the results haven’t been there. But I think he is the right man.”
Fernandes’ comments suggest a pragmatic understanding of the club’s financial situation and the potential need to generate funds for new acquisitions. His future will undoubtedly be a key talking point as Manchester United embark on a critical summer of rebuilding.
