Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund could be on his way out of Old Trafford this summer, with three Serie A clubs reportedly interested in bringing the Denmark international back to Italy.
Højlund, who arrived at United for £70 million from Atalanta, scored 16 goals in his debut season. However, his 2024-25 campaign has been largely disappointing, particularly in the Premier League where he has managed just four goals in 31 appearances. While the Europa League offered some respite, culminating in a final defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday, his league form has raised significant concerns.
Manager Ruben Amorim has consistently backed the young Dane due to a lack of other viable options upfront. However, reports suggest that United are now actively seeking an upgrade at the center-forward position this summer, with Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap being considered as potential targets.
This decision to pursue new attacking talent casts a shadow over Højlund’s future. Fabrizio Romano reports that Inter Milan are the latest club to register their interest, having enquired about the striker’s availability and viewing him as a potential option for the summer transfer window. Napoli and Juventus had also reportedly contacted United about a move for Højlund in March and April.
Initially, reports in March suggested United were looking for £50 million to sell Højlund. However, it now appears they have significantly reduced their asking price, with the latest reports indicating a willingness to offload the underperforming 22-year-old for just £30 million.
Højlund’s recent performances have drawn heavy criticism. He struggled to trouble Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero in United’s Europa League final defeat and delivered another subdued display against Chelsea the previous week.
His form prompted a scathing review from United legend Roy Keane, who believes both the club and the player are running out of excuses. “Hojlund looked like a young kid, he looked like he had come straight out of the academy,” Keane told Sky Sports.
“His runs weren’t right, his hold up play, his timing. If you’re a striker playing for Man United and you are having one shot on target… we make excuses for him saying he needs more confidence but when you are a striker up there, you have to make things happen sometimes. What the big clubs have, what United always had, is strikers who can produce something by themselves because they have quality, desire, determination, a bit of experience, football intelligence. You don’t see it with Hojlund. He needs a little bit of support but you need to do better.”
With a reduced price tag and interest from multiple Serie A clubs, a summer exit for Rasmus Højlund from Manchester United appears increasingly likely.
