Manchester United’s ambitious attempt to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has hit a major wall, with their proposal to take the player on a season-long loan being immediately rejected.
New manager Ruben Amorim has identified the goalkeeper position as an area of concern, especially with current number one André Onana set to miss the start of the season due to injury. Martínez was subsequently identified as a top target to solve this issue.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, United proposed a loan move for the World Cup winner over the weekend. However, the offer was instantly turned down by Aston Villa officials, who were reportedly left “incredulous” by the suggestion that a Premier League rival with similar ambitions would request a temporary deal for such a key player.
Villa have made their position clear: they will only entertain permanent offers for Martínez and value him at around £40 million. With the player on a long-term contract, the club is in a very strong negotiating position.
The loan attempt highlights United’s current financial situation, which requires them to sell players before making significant purchases. Although Martínez is understood to be keen on a move to Manchester, a deal now looks highly unlikely unless the Red Devils can generate the necessary funds to submit a suitable permanent offer.
