Young Ajax and Netherlands defender Jorrel Hato is actively pushing for a move to Chelsea, going as far as requesting to be left out of his team’s latest pre-season friendly to avoid jeopardizing the potential transfer.

According to Dutch outlet Voetbal International, Hato specifically asked not to feature in Sunday’s match against Como because he did not want to risk picking up an injury that could derail his proposed move to Stamford Bridge. Ajax reportedly accepted his request.

This decisive action from the player comes as negotiations between Chelsea and Ajax are making “significant progress,” according to The Athletic. While Chelsea’s opening bid for the defender was rejected, there is now growing confidence on both sides that a compromise on the fee will be reached in the coming days.

Chelsea have already reached a full agreement on personal terms with the 19-year-old, who has officially informed Ajax of his desire to leave for the Premier League this summer.

The only remaining hurdle is the final transfer fee. Ajax are seeking a package worth between €50 million and €60 million for their prized asset. It is expected that a final deal will be structured with significant bonuses and a potential sell-on clause to help bridge the gap between the two clubs’ valuations.

Hato may not be the only Dutch talent arriving at Chelsea this summer. The club remains in advanced talks to sign Xavi Simons, a move that could be funded by the surprisingly lucrative sale of João Félix to Al Nassr.
