Manchester United have reportedly not yet formally ended their interest in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško, with the club now holding internal talks to decide whether to rival Newcastle United for his signature.
Newcastle have identified the Slovenian international as their preferred replacement for wantaway star Alexander Isak. As it stands, the Magpies are the only concrete suitors for Šeško, but United’s lingering interest could spark a bidding war if they decide to act.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United officials, including manager Ruben Amorim, are set to hold discussions to determine their approach. They are well aware that Newcastle’s firm interest means they may not have long to make a final decision.
However, any potential move from United faces significant obstacles. The primary issue is financial, with a deal for Šeško likely to cost over €70 million. The club is not thought to be in a position to afford such a move at this point, with player sales remaining their immediate priority to raise funds.
Furthermore, there is no guarantee that Šeško would accept a move to Old Trafford. The 22-year-old famously rejected the Manchester outfit in 2023, opting instead for Leipzig due to a similar style of play.
While the door for Šeško to United is not completely closed, it remains a complicated option. The club continues to explore other striker targets, including Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, as they weigh up their next move.
