Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has moved to reassure fans over Marcus Rashford’s early substitution during his debut on Sunday, confirming the decision was a pre-planned measure to manage the new signing’s fitness.

Rashford came on as a halftime substitute in the 3-1 pre-season win over Vissel Kobe but was surprisingly withdrawn after just over 30 minutes on the pitch. The sight of him leaving the game early sparked initial concern among supporters who feared a potential injury.

However, Flick has since insisted that the Manchester United loanee is simply not yet at the same fitness level as the rest of the squad. “He’s a week behind the others,” the manager explained. “He hasn’t been training as much with the ball, and we want to look after him.”

Rashford himself echoed his manager’s sentiments, acknowledging that his cameo was “beneficial in terms of physical fitness.” He added, “I’m looking forward to the upcoming matches. It’s very important to adapt to the team, get into the playing style, and deliver good football.”

When asked about his preferred role in the team, the England international emphasized his versatility. While admitting he “maybe prefer[s] the left side,” he told reporters, “I play where the team needs me… One of my strengths is being able to play in various positions.”

Fans can therefore be relieved that Rashford’s early exit was purely a precaution. With his fitness being carefully managed and a clear willingness to adapt to the team’s needs, his promising debut has set a positive tone for his loan spell in Catalonia.
