Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has singled out young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo for a mix of high praise and a public challenge, warning him that he must improve the tempo of his game to become a regular starter this season.

Amorim hailed the 20-year-old as a “big talent” and explained that his “perfect position is more near the ball, always with the ball.”

However, the manager quickly identified the key area for development required for Mainoo to reach the next level. “He needs to increase the rhythm, the pace,” Amorim stated. “I’m always on top of that with Kobbie because he is so good sometimes, but he can be better.”

The new signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo should ensure Mainoo remains in his preferred central midfield role this season, after being used in various positions last year, including a brief stint as an emergency striker.

Despite the manager admitting he has “big plans” for the academy graduate, Mainoo faces a huge battle for consistent minutes. Amorim’s preferred two-man midfield system means he is in direct competition with established stars like captain Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Mason Mount, as well as Manuel Ugarte and fellow youngster Toby Collyer.

This intense competition has led to some speculation about his future, with Chelsea known to be long-term admirers. However, Mainoo is understood to be keen to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford, where he is under contract until 2027.

The message from Ruben Amorim is clear: while he sees immense potential in Kobbie Mainoo, he has laid down a direct challenge for the young star. To secure a permanent spot in United’s crowded midfield, Mainoo must add more speed and intensity to his undeniable natural talent.
