In a bombshell announcement that has stunned Tottenham supporters, club captain Son Heung-min has officially revealed he will be leaving the club this summer, bringing an end to a historic ten-year spell in North London.
Son made the stunning declaration at a press conference in his native Seoul, South Korea, ahead of a pre-season friendly against Newcastle United. “I just want to share the information that I have decided to leave this club this summer,” he told reporters. “It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career.”
The 33-year-old explained that his decision was driven by a desire for a new challenge after a hugely successful decade with the club. “The main reason is I have achieved everything I can at Tottenham,” he stated. “I need a new environment to push myself to get more out of me… 10 years is a long time.”
While Son did not confirm his next destination, he is heavily tipped for a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) with LAFC. A move to the Los Angeles-based club would see him reunite with his former Spurs teammate and captain, Hugo Lloris.
The LAFC link is strong. The MLS side is keen to add a new star Designated Player and has a history of signing former Spurs legends, most notably Gareth Bale. A move for Son would also hold immense commercial value, given the large South Korean population in the Los Angeles area.
Son leaves Tottenham as an undisputed club legend, having scored 173 goals and provided 101 assists in 454 competitive matches. His departure marks the end of an iconic chapter for both the player and the club, with a new challenge in the United States now firmly on the horizon.
