Manchester United are reportedly prepared to take a massive financial loss on striker Rasmus Højlund, with the club now willing to sell him for less than half of the £72 million they paid for him just two years ago.

The club’s desire to move on from the Danish international comes after a desperately underwhelming 2024–25 campaign, in which he managed to score just four Premier League goals in over 2,000 minutes of football.

According to a report from BBC Sport, United would now be willing to accept an offer as low as £30 million to facilitate his departure. This comes after minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe publicly included the striker in a group of players he deemed “not good enough” and “overpaid.”

However, there is a clear conflict between the club’s intentions and the player’s wishes. Højlund himself has been firm in his public stance that he wants to stay and fight for his place. Just last week, he rejected advances from RB Leipzig and insisted, “My plan is very clear…that is for me to stay and fight for my spot.”

Manager Ruben Amorim offered no such reassurances. While noting the player is “improving,” he gave a cold assessment of the situation, stating, “I don’t know what is going to happen until the market is closed. We suffered a lot because of the lack of goals last season.”

Despite his struggles, there is no shortage of interest in the 22-year-old, with Serie A trio AC Milan, Inter, and Napoli all credited with an interest. RB Leipzig also remain admirers, a significant fact given that United are pursuing their star striker, Benjamin Šeško, as a direct replacement.

The situation is now a clear standoff. The club is actively inviting bids with a low price tag, but the player wants to stay. Despite his public declarations, Højlund may be forced to find a new club before the window closes
