The relationship between Europa League hero Ademola Lookman and his club, Atalanta, has publicly fractured after the Nigerian forward officially handed in a formal transfer request in an attempt to force a move away this summer.
In a powerful and emotional public statement, Lookman confirmed his decision, explaining that he feels he has “no choice” but to take this action. The move was triggered after Atalanta rejected an opening bid from Serie A rivals Inter Milan, the club that Lookman has made clear he wishes to join.
The winger has accused the club’s ownership of going back on their word. “Myself and the ownership of the club have been in agreement that now is the right time and the club were clear with me that if a fair offer came in they would allow me to move,” Lookman wrote. He stated that he believes Inter’s offer was fair, but “sadly the club are blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand.”
Lookman cited “many months of broken promises and what I feel has been poor treatment” as the reasons for his decision to speak out publicly.
Despite the conflict, his statement was also filled with emotion for the club and its supporters. He called his three years in Bergamo “wonderful” and the Europa League victory one of the “proudest moments of my career.” He apologized directly to the fans, saying, “I’m truly sorry it’s come to this. I hope you can understand this incredibly difficult situation.”
The situation has now become a very public and messy standoff. By releasing this statement, Lookman has put immense pressure on the Atalanta board to return to the negotiating table with Inter Milan and find a solution for their wantaway star.
