The football world is eagerly awaiting the announcement of the 30 nominees for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, set to be officially revealed later today. While last year’s winner, Rodri, is unlikely to feature prominently after an injury-plagued season, a new and overwhelming favourite has emerged to claim football’s most prestigious individual prize.
The clear frontrunner for the award is Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé. The French winger had a sensational and historic 2024-25 season, leading PSG to a remarkable treble that included the Ligue 1 title, a domestic cup, and the coveted UEFA Champions League, all while finishing as the league’s top scorer.
A strong contingent of challengers from Barcelona is also expected to be in the running. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal had an incredible year, leading the club to a domestic treble of their own, securing La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup. His teammates Raphinha, who finished as the Champions League’s top scorer, and Robert Lewandowski are also expected to be nominated for their stellar campaigns.
Despite less team success, other individual superstars will undoubtedly be on the list. Kylian Mbappé had a stunning debut season at Real Madrid, winning the European Golden Shoe for his goalscoring exploits. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is also a top contender after winning the Premier League title while also securing both the Golden Boot and the Playmaker of the Year awards.
The 30-man list is expected to include a host of other stars who had impressive seasons, including PSG’s Vitinha and Achraf Hakimi, Arsenal’s Declan Rice, Bayern’s Harry Kane, and Man City’s Erling Haaland.
In the race for the Kopa Trophy for the best young player, Rennes starlet Desiré Doué is a name to watch, especially after his memorable goal in the Champions League final.
Although the full list will be revealed today, the debate is already raging. With his unprecedented team success and individual dominance, Ousmane Dembélé is the clear man to beat for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
