Arsenal have concluded their pre-season preparations on a high note, securing a convincing 3-0 victory over Spanish side Athletic Club to win the Emirates Cup in their final friendly on Saturday.
The win was a much-needed confidence boost for Mikel Arteta’s side. It marked a significant improvement on their previous performances and ends a two-game losing streak just one week before their highly anticipated Premier League opener against Manchester United.
The biggest highlight for the Emirates Stadium crowd was seeing their new star striker, Viktor Gyökeres, score his first goal for the club. The Swedish international broke the deadlock in the 34th minute with a powerful header, getting on the end of a tantalising cross from fellow new signing Martín Zubimendi, who has been a standout performer this pre-season.
The Gunners immediately doubled their advantage just two minutes later. Bukayo Saka finished off a quick and clinical counter-attack to put Arsenal firmly in control with a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The second half saw impressive cameos from other new arrivals. Winger Noni Madueke was introduced and provided a different dynamic, playing as a traditional wide player who hugs the touchline. Spanish defender Cristhian Mosquera also looked solid and composed during his extended appearance.
The victory was sealed by substitute Kai Havertz, who came off the bench to score the third and final goal of the game. To cap off a perfect day for the home fans, Arsenal also won the customary post-match penalty shootout.
It was the perfect end to pre-season for Arsenal. With their new number nine off the mark, other new signings looking sharp and integrated, and a convincing win in front of their home fans, the Gunners will now head to Old Trafford for the season opener with renewed confidence.
