Reigning champions Liverpool have begun their Premier League title defence with a dramatic and hard-fought 4-2 victory over Bournemouth, requiring a last-gasp winner from substitute Federico Chiesa to secure all three points on an eventful opening night at Anfield.
It was an emotionally-charged and difficult evening, with tributes paid to the late Diogo Jota before the match was later overshadowed and delayed by a report of alleged racist abuse directed at Bournemouth’s two-goal hero, Antoine Semenyo.
On the pitch, Liverpool’s new-look attack got off to a flying start. New signing Hugo Ekitike scored a brilliant opening goal on his official debut, and then turned provider to set up Cody Gakpo for the team’s second goal shortly after halftime.
At 2-0 up, the Reds looked to be cruising to victory, but a brilliant quick-fire brace from Antoine Semenyo stunned Anfield. The Cherries forward scored twice in 15 minutes, including a glorious 60-yard solo run and finish, to level the score at 2-2.
With the champions staring at a disappointing opening-day draw, another hero emerged from the bench. Federico Chiesa, whose future at the club had been the subject of speculation this summer, scored a brilliant, instinctive volley in the 88th minute to restore Liverpool’s lead.
Mohamed Salah then added a fourth goal in stoppage time with a classic solo slalom and finish to finally put the result beyond doubt and seal a chaotic but vital opening-night victory for Arne Slot’s side.
While the three points and the impressive debuts of the new attacking signings are huge positives, the two sloppy goals conceded will give the manager plenty to think about. It was a thrilling start to the season, but one that showed Liverpool’s title defence will be anything but straightforward.
