Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly personally funding travel and accommodation for numerous members of his staff and their families to attend the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.

This gesture comes in the wake of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s stringent financial controls, which have apparently led to the discontinuation of complimentary match tickets for club employees. Instead, staff are expected to attend a watch party in Manchester, with a limited offer of two drink vouchers.

However, Amorim has seemingly decided to reward his backroom team’s efforts independently. Both The Athletic and ESPN report that he is covering the travel and lodging expenses for up to two guests each for 30 employees, including coaches, physiotherapists, and other support staff considered “lower-paid.” This mirrors the perk afforded to all first-team players, who have each received two complimentary tickets for family and friends.

Should these guests witness a United victory over Spurs in Bilbao on May 21st, their return to Manchester will be met with a muted reception. In contrast to Tottenham’s planned trophy parade, United are reportedly planning a “low-key” barbecue at their training ground.

This subdued approach is a direct consequence of United’s disappointing domestic performance under Ruben Amorim, who has overseen only six wins in 25 Premier League matches, averaging a mere 0.96 points per game. This is a lower points-per-game ratio than the 1.22 achieved by Erik ten Hag in his initial 11 games before his dismissal.

Amorim himself has openly expressed his unease regarding United’s form, stating, “How a manager of Manchester United is supposed to feel in that position – embarrassed, and it’s hard to accept. I think everybody has to think seriously about a lot of things here.”
