Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is reportedly on the verge of leaving Anfield this summer, having reached a verbal agreement to join Atletico Madrid, according to reports emanating from Spain.

The Uruguay international has experienced a challenging season under new manager Arne Slot, struggling to secure regular playing time and making only eight Premier League starts. Liverpool are understood to be open to cashing in on Nunez during the upcoming transfer window, though they face a significant challenge in recouping the substantial £64 million initial fee they paid for the 25-year-old. The total value of Nunez’s transfer from Benfica in 2022 could reach £85 million with add-ons.

According to Spanish radio network Cadena SER, Atletico Madrid have already held discussions with Nunez, and the Liverpool forward “has made it clear” that he is keen on a move to Diego Simeone’s side this summer. The report further indicates that “everything has been discussed with the player,” with the only remaining hurdle being the negotiation of a transfer fee between Atletico and Liverpool.

Atletico Madrid are not the sole club vying for Nunez’s signature. Napoli have also reportedly made an approach, and the Uruguayan forward has the option of a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are themselves on the verge of completing their first summer signing, with Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong having successfully completed his medical on Monday. The 24-year-old, who has a €35 million (£29.5 million) release clause in his contract, is Liverpool’s preferred choice to replace the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Premier League champions are also reportedly in talks to sign Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, indicating a busy summer of defensive reinforcements for Arne Slot’s side
