Real Madrid has confirmed that midfield legend Luka Modrić will be leaving the club this summer upon the expiration of his contract.

Modrić, who will turn 40 in September, has been signing one-year deals for the past few seasons, and there were suggestions that he would be offered another 12-month extension to remain at the Santiago Bernabéu, with incoming new coach Xabi Alonso even reportedly making a specific request for him to stay.

However, despite Alonso’s reported desire, Madrid confirmed in a press release that Modrić will depart the club at the end of the season. Nevertheless, Modrić will sign a temporary agreement to play for Madrid in this summer’s Club World Cup, which is expected to conclude on July 13, before moving to a new destination.

“Real Madrid C.F. and our captain Luka Modrić have agreed to conclude an unforgettable period as a player for our club at the end of the Club World Cup this summer, which our team will play in the United States starting June 18,” the press release stated. “Real Madrid wishes to express its deepest gratitude and affection for someone who is already one of the greatest legends of our club and world football.”

Club president Florentino Pérez himself offered a personal farewell to Modrić, who overcame initial criticism after joining the club in 2012 to become an iconic part of Madrid’s history.

“Luka Modrić will forever remain in the hearts of all Real Madrid fans as a special and exemplary player, who has always represented the values of Real Madrid,” said Pérez. “His football has captivated Real Madrid fans and supporters around the world. His legacy will live on forever.”

Modrić himself posted an emotional message to Real Madrid fans on social media. “The time has come,” he wrote on Instagram. “The time I never wanted to come, but that’s football, in life everything has a beginning and an end… On Saturday, I will play my last game at the Santiago Bernabéu.”

“I arrived in 2012 hoping to wear the shirt of the best club in the world and with the ambition to achieve great things, but I could not have imagined what followed. Playing for Real Madrid has changed my life as a player and as a person. I am proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history.”

Modrić has won every trophy Real Madrid has competed for during his decade in the Spanish capital. Although he missed out on ending his final campaign with domestic silverware, the Croatian legend can still boast a remarkable trophy haul that includes four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey, and five Supercopa de España – in addition to his six Champions League triumphs.

“I sincerely thank the club, especially President Florentino Pérez, my teammates, coaches, and everyone who helped me during my time here,” Modrić added. “Over the years, I have experienced incredible moments, impossible comebacks, finals, celebrations, and magical nights at the Bernabéu… We have won everything, and I was very happy. Very, very happy.”
