Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah has cemented his legacy as a Premier League icon, being named the 2025 PFA Player of the Year on Tuesday and becoming the first player in the award’s illustrious history to win it three times.

The Egyptian king beat out a stacked list of nominees to claim the prize, including Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Arsenal’s Declan Rice, and his own Liverpool teammate, Alexis Mac Allister.

Salah’s victory comes after a truly sensational and dominant 2024–25 campaign. He was the driving force behind Liverpool’s Premier League title triumph, finishing the season as the league’s top goalscorer with 29 goals and also winning the Playmaker of the Year award with 18 assists.

This is the third time Salah has been voted as the best player by his peers, having previously won the award in the 2017–18 and 2021–22 seasons. He now stands alone, having surpassed a list of two-time winners that includes modern legends like Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, and Gareth Bale.

What makes this particular win even sweeter for the Liverpool talisman is that it’s the first time he has won the award in the same season that his team has won the Premier League title. The last time the Reds were crowned champions, the individual prize was awarded to Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

While Liverpool’s shortcomings in other cup competitions may affect his chances for the more globally-focused Ballon d’Or, this historic PFA award is the ultimate recognition from his fellow professionals of his incredible individual season and his status as the undisputed best player in the world’s toughest league
