A perfect start eases the nerves
Entering Saturday’s fixture in desperate need of a positive result, United made the perfect start to calm the Old Trafford nerves. Mason Mount, returning to the starting lineup, produced an excellent touch and finish from just inside the penalty area to give the hosts a much-welcomed early lead.
The hosts were eager to capitalize on their encouraging start and pushed for a second. Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo both forced Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs into theatrical saves, before Bruno Fernandes saw an exquisite effort tipped onto the crossbar. United soon doubled their advantage, however, with Benjamin Šeško scoring for the second consecutive game, converting from close range following a long throw from Casemiro.
VAR drama and a first clean sheet
Sunderland thought they had a route back into the game in first-half stoppage time when a penalty was awarded, but the referee correctly reversed his decision after a VAR review showed no contact from Šeško.
In the second half, United continued to control proceedings, comfortably keeping Sunderland at bay to secure not only their third straight home win but also their first clean sheet of the season. This was more than just three points; it was a performance of control and defensive solidity that the team desperately needed, providing Amorim a platform to build upon during the international break.
