Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil has rejected the possibility of in-form forward Matheus Cunha leaving amid links to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Wolves started the campaign in woeful form but a recent four-game unbeaten streak has helped them rise out of the relegation zone and into 17th ahead of Saturday’s clash with Bournemouth.
Key to their revival have been the performances of Brazilian star Cunha, who has bagged four goals and contributed another three assists during their positive run in recent weeks.
The rumour mill recently linked the 25-year-old with a move in the winter transfer window in a little over a month, but Old Gold boss O’Neil firmly quashed any suggestion of an imminent departure.
Speaking in a press conference before the weekend, the former midfielder revealed: “Matheus won’t leave in January, definitely not. Zero concern on my part.
“I want him to play as well as possible and I want everyone in the world to want him.”
United have been linked with a number of new strikers since Ruben Amorim took over in the Old Trafford dugout from Erik ten Hag, despite the club signing both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee in recent years.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Randal Kolo Muani and Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface have been touted as potential targets, while there is also supposed interest in Ipswich Town star Liam Delap, formerly of Manchester City.
Amorim has, however, pushed back on suggestions his new team needs a fresh focal point, insisting it’s his job to make the current squad better.
The 39-year-old picked up his first win on Thursday night in the Europa League against Bodo/Glimt and has the chance to extend his unbeaten start to three games on Sunday when Everton visit Old Trafford.
